How meshing works

  1. Two gears mesh if they share a module and a pressure angle. Tooth counts can be anything — change the ratio with the tooth counts.
  2. Centre distance for two gears = (N₁ + N₂) × module ÷ 2. Use the pitch circles in the preview to lay them out before cutting.
  3. Strength rule of thumb for laser-cut wood: module ≥ material thickness × 1.5 for visible-tooth gears. Below that, teeth crack under load.
  4. Low tooth counts (N < ~18 at 20°) undercut. The geometry still cuts and meshes; the flanks just narrow near the root. If you need strong small pinions, bump the pressure angle to 25°.
